The Journey or the Destination?

Have you ever anticipated something you were really excited to get?  Maybe a new car, or even do you remember when you got your first car as a teen?  What about a promotion at work you were striving for, or how about asking out the person you were sure was going to be the love of your life?   What about anticipating the birth of your first child?  Do you remember the joy, excitement, and wonder that that brought to your life?

Then what happens?  You get the new car, you keep it clean for a few weeks, or maybe a couple months, and then the novelty wears off doesn’t it?… Usually.  Or you get that promotion and after a couple weeks, the excitement is gone.  I’m not even going to touch the “dating your spouse to be”… we won’t go there… but let’s just say you do marry the one person you are just meant to spend forever with and leading up to when you were expecting your first child- the bliss of all the preparing and waiting.  Then after a few weeks and a few sleepless nights & stinky diapers, yes, you still love your bundle of joy, but the anticipation itself has wore off, right?

So isn’t it safe to assume then, that the excitement, joy, bliss, really is in the journey?

It holds true with our business life as well.  The fun is in the journey- or at least we should be having fun!  I know I am.

I am just on the cusp of reaching a major goal and the ride is so fun!  I just love the anticipation of it!   Although I am really striving not to analyze it, wonder when it will exactly happen, and basically think about the how.  That’s not my job.  My purpose is to just keep doing what needs to be done, believe it’s happening and feel it happening as if already done, and being ready to receive it when it does come.  There is just something about today, though, that I am extra excited!

Do you have this much anticipation in your life, in your career?  I hope so.  If not, why not?  Is there something you can do to enjoy your job more?  A job change, or even just moving to a different space w/in the same office?  Locating to a different area w/in the same company, or possibly a career change?  What can you do to create a more pleasant atmosphere for yourself?

If you totally don’t like what you are doing, what direction do you want to go in?  What can you do to start moving in that direction?  Life is too short to not have fun… in all aspects of your life.  Believe you can.  If there is something you really want to do, that you know you would totally enjoy doing, that’s most likely what you are meant to do.  If you are passionate about something, then go for it- Next week I’m going to tell you of a story of a friend of mine who did just that.  I love her outlook on it all!

In the meantime, do what you can TODAY to…

Make today the best day ever!

Amy
