Why I wrote Discovering Life’s Blessings in Disguise

July 24, 2012 at 1:05 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Since we have quite a few new friends to my page, I thought  I’d give you a little sneak peak into my book.

I didn’t write my book for me- I never really had any intentions of being an author-  except for when I was in Elementary school, I think once or twice I might have thought, “wouldn’t it be cool to be a famous author?”  But let’s face it,  as we grow older we unfortunately let outside influences of the World squash our dreams.

I can assure you, during our nearly 10 year period of back to back health issues with our kids and then myself and financial stress do to all the medical bills, I certainly wasn’t thinking all that time, “Oh this is cool, I’m going to write about this someday!”  I was literally trying to survive mentally and emotionally each and every day. But as we started to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and most of our health struggles were behind us, others started telling me  I should write a book.  Even almost strangers who I’d meet and we’d get to talking and getting to know each other, would say to me, “Your story would make a great book,”  or, ” You should write a book about that”.  Of course even some family members, my Dad being the first one, encouraged me to write a book about our life experiences.

The seed was planted, and as friends would come to me, or bring their friends to me, to ask me what we did, or how we got through, I realized I had the opportunity to help others.  I became so passionate about that- the idea that I could take all the crap we went through, and help others along their journey through life.

I am very excited to be on this journey of helping and inspiring others to get through what ever struggles they are facing.  I am starting to see the blessings in what we went through, as painful as they were at the time, and sometimes still are when I allow myself to deeply reflect on them. I would love for you to be someone I’ve helped, if there are issues in your life right now that seem insurmountable, or if you have a friend or family member who is struggling.  Now that the release date is so near, please help me spread the word about my book so that if it’s the right fit, I’ll be able to be an inspiration to others.  I would be very appreciative if you would share my blog, or facebook page.  I may not become famous, but just knowing I’ve helped a few will be a blessing to me.   We all are faced with challenges in life, the trick is sometimes, Discovering Life’s Blessings in Disguise!

Make today the best day ever!

Listening to our Inner Voice

image by Jamie CourtadeI recently read one of my favorite books. “Promptings” by Kody Bateman. It’s a great inspirational book about listening to our inner voice within us, which rings so true with me. I learned during the time of the girls being in the hospital after their premature birth, that it is important to listen to that voice within us. Especially as a mother, but every one has that voice, and sometimes it’s more of a feeling of what to do, or not to do. I have learned over the past 17 years to really get in tune to that voice within me and 95-99% of the time, it’s right. “Turn R instead of going straight, call this person, send that person a card, tell that person you love them”. Or sometimes it’s messages like, “go back inside and get your list”, or, “remember to grab your water to take with you”, whatever it may be. Kody says the more we listen to our inner promptings, the more and bigger promptings we receive. And I’m finding that to be so true.  As we learn to listen to our inner voice with small things, we then may get inspiration in bigger things;  to start our own business, to get out of our comfort zone and introduce ourself to someone we greatly admire, or perhaps, maybe, to write a book!
I remember reconnecting with a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile. I had walked right past an aisle in the grocery store that I needed an item from, and a little later while still in the store, remembered I needed that item. I went back to that aisle and just as I did, my friend saw me and called my name. We chatted a bit and reconnected, getting together a few times since then and found out we can mutually benefit each other not only in friendship, but now with our businesses.
But I had to be aware of what my inner voice was telling me. So often in this high tech world, we can’t hear anything within, because of all the noise in the outside world, iphones, radios, tv, computers, all going at us all the time. I often wonder how many great ideas, inspirations, or even simple helpful thoughts people are missing, because they’re tuning out their inner self.
When we’re open and responsive to our intuition, instinct or inner voice, it leads us to some really great opportunities, and we begin to see that things really do happen for a reason. Big things, little things. That’s one of the focal points in my book. I really don’t believe in coincidences- there are those silly ones, where as kids, we’d say the same thing at the same time, ya know the “jinx you owe me a coke” type ones. But I mean in a bigger picture way.
I’ll get more in to this in detail some other time, and there is definitely more about it in my book. But start by looking for and listening to those promptings, you’re inner voice within you. Some times you’ll be surprised by what you hear.
Make today the best day ever!

Why I Wrote “Discovering Life’s Blessings in Disguise”

January 31, 2012 at 6:04 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Since we have quite a few new friends to my page, I thought  I’d give you a little sneak peak into my book.

I didn’t write my book for me- I never really had any intentions of being an author-  Except for when I was in Elementary or grade school- I think most of us have an inspiration and think, “wouldn’t it be cool to be a famous author?”  But let’s face it,  as we grow older we unfortunately start to let outside influences of the World squash our dreams.

As we went through nearly 10 years of back to back to back life threatening issues with our kids and then myself, I certainly wasn’t thinking all that time, “Oh this is cool, I’m going to write about this someday and become famous!”  I was literally trying to survive mentally and emotionally each and every day.

But as we started to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and most of our health struggles were behind us, others started telling me  I should write a book.  Even practical strangers who I’d meet and we’d get to talking and getting to know each other, would say to me, “That would make a great book,”  or, ” You should write your story about that”.  Of course even some family members, my Dad being the first one, encouraged me to write a book about our life experiences.

I would love for you to be someone I’ve helped, if there are issues in your life right now that seem insurmountable, or if you have a friend or family member who is struggling.  Please continue to be with me on this journey of getting my book published, and out there to be an inspiration to others.  I would be very appreciative if you would share my blog, or facebook page.  I may not become famous, but just knowing I’ve helped a few will be a blessing to me.   We all are faced with challenges in life, the trick is sometimes, Discovering Life’s Blessings in Disguise!

Christmas does not have to = stress

Now that Thanksgiving weekend is over here in the United States, it’s full steam ahead to Christmas.  It’s so unfortunate that this time of year has to be so hectic for so many.  And I’ll be one of the first ones to admit, that I get sucked in to all the stress, and busyness of the PRE-Christmas shananagans!  We have 2 children that have December Birthdays- one on the 10th, and the other on the 30th, and that adds another whole element to my December stress level.

I don’t think my Mom stressed about Christmas nearly as much as I did- other than, if they were going to be able to buy me presents some years.  My parents were Self- employed, and their livelihood depended on the weather, so it was feast or famine for us.  But there certainly wasn’t the pressure of Christmas back then like their is today… non-stop Christmas parties to go to, elaborate expensive gifts to try to one-up the previous year, or to keep up w/ the “Jone’s”, etc.  Each year, this World that we live in keeps inventing more and more “things”, many… just don’t really improve our quality of life.  In fact, it’s just the opposite.  Many steal social, emotional, spiritual, psychological and academic growth from our children.  They really don’t “need” all that “stuff”.  We have a few of those “things” in our house, but not many- not nearly the amount I hear my 10 year old son especially, saying what some of his classmates have.

In some years, we’ve given the gift of time to our kids- in the form of “coupons” for bowling, mini-golf, water- park, and to some of the areas around here where we live- close to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and other places to take them to.  Those were fun gifts to give- I made them quickly and easily either by hand or on the computer, and they were fun gifts for them to receive and for us to use together!  Yes, they still got some presents under the tree, that is a “gift” that every child should be fortunate to experience, but sadly, many aren’t.

If we each just pared down our purchases by even $10, and gave that money to a charity in our local area that helps to make sure that children get to have a gift under the tree… can you imagine the impact that would have?

Give more than just “stuff” for Christmas this year, give the gift of yourself to those in your life.  Let them know you care by telling  them, spending time w/ them and showing them you care- not just giving them something that in the end, is not really going to make a difference in their life.

As we are in this Season of preparation for Christmas, please remember to take time for yourself- nurture your self, slow down, and find a way to make Christmas more meaningful… after all, the real meaning of the season, has nothing to do w/ things at all… but LOVE.

Thanks for reading!  A quick update on my upcoming book!- It will be published and released in early 2012- please visit my facebook page to stay up to date!

Back to Blogging!

Hi Friends!

Wow!  It’s been awhile, a long while since I’ve posted a blog- almost  a year!  Life just happens some times and you just have to let some things go- ya know what I mean?!  Well, I have a very good reason to be back- I am finally moving ahead w/ my book!  YES!  The doors to getting it published have been opened!  Some time in the next 4 months or so, it will be out!

So, some of you may be thinking by now, “What book”?  A great question!  I started writing “Blessings in Disguise” 2 years ago, well, a little more than that, but 2 years ago, seriously dedicating to it nearly every day.  Was done and had it finished in just a few short months.  In the meantime I was able to be a part of, “A Juicy Juicy Joyful Life”, a collaboration of 41 inspirational women authors, each with their own individual chapter, which was released and became a best seller on Amazon & Barnes & Noble in Sept. of 2010!  Then as I finished the final touches on my book, a little over a  year ago, I didn’t pursue getting it published whole heartedly.   I visited a few different options, some didn’t feel right to me and others  just didn’t work out.  But then, my mom, who has been one of my biggest supporters, gave me the 1 really little push I needed, just a few weeks ago.  She called me up, and said, “What can I do to help you get your book published?”  I told her I just don’t have the time to research publishing companies, gather the information who to contact and where to send my manuscript.  So one day shortly after that, she came over with her laptop, I gave her some companies I had thought about contacting, and she did the legwork.  I called one that was right here in my home town, a publishing assistance firm, not a publisher, they help individuals self publish their own work, and that is all there is!  The Jenkins Group, who incidentally, I’ve known the owners wife for many years through a mom’s group I was part of several years ago, just didn’t know about their company, has been around for over 20 years assisting authors in getting published!

My first thought was, “Why didn’t I do this a year ago?”- But, as you read my book when it comes out, you’ll understand my next immediate thought, “Because everything happens for a reason and when it’s suppose to.”  Although, I really don’t see the purpose of it waiting over a whole year longer than what I wanted, I know it’s going to touch thousands of people and help them get through some rough times they may be facing, or still struggling with for many months or years.

So, the beginning of the real work begins- I have final edits to make, and am moving forward!  Would love to have you join me on this journey!  Please keep watch, and I’ll be better at keeping you posted!  I am grateful to every one of my readers!

You can-

Are you a Spinning top, or Merry-go-round?

January 11, 2011 at 4:05 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Have you ever just been burned out?  Who hasn’t?  Right?  Did you know that it’s okay- as long as you learn something from it?  I am usually so on the go, from the moment I get up, until finally some 16+ hours later when I finally close my eyes for the night.  It’s something I grew into after going through a time of depression several years ago, two different times in my life.  Now, I have a hard time sitting still without feeling like I’m neglecting something, should be doing something, or that I’m not being productive.  Most of this comes  from how I learned to pull myself out of the depression.  I started by talking myself into doing “just one thing today.”  And I’d feel so good about getting that “one thing” accomplished, it inspired me to do something else, and so on & so forth.  I started feeling like I accomplished something, I felt worthwhile.  Now, almost the opposite is the case- as I said a minute ago, I have a hard time  just being still.

But, being still is not only okay, it’s essential at times.  If, like myself, we’re in a constant state of motion- there’s no time to really let our minds be still and process all that’s going on.  We are like a spinning top, going, going, going, but in no real direction- no plan.

I talked the last 2 blogs about meditation- and while this blog still applies to that, I want to focus more on burn out.  If we are going so fast like that spinning top, eventually what happens to the top?  It starts to slow down, wobbles a bit, and then… plop.  Done.  When we take time to meditate, breath, focus, and enjoy what’s going on around us, then we can be more like a Merry-go-round at the Midway.  Gently going round, doing what we need to do, but stopping from time to time to drop off or pick up passengers… or projects, maybe actually in this case.  Taking a break to focus, look around, and get right back at it.

I don’t know if this is a silly comparison or what- but it’s what came to mind.  I know for me, I tend to be the spinning top all too often.  But then all the sudden, bam, I’m down… until something or someone picks me back up again and gives me a push.

I spent most of December being in burn out mode-but instead of letting it get to me, this time, somehow, I was actually able to be grateful for it.  I needed the time to just enjoy the Holiday season more so than I usually do.  We have 2 of our 3 children w/ birthdays also in December, so that makes it extra hectic, on top of all the Christmas concerts, plays, shopping, baking, etc.

I did what I needed to do, to keep in touch w/ those I needed to for my business, but I didn’t push myself to do any more than that, and it felt good, it felt right.

But, it also gave me the time to really take a look at where I want to go in 2011.  I spent a great deal of time contemplating, discerning, & thinking about the upcoming year.  And it was great to do.  As each day of this first month of 2011 unfolds, I am feeling more & more excited for the whole year!

What about you?  What plans do you have for 2011?  What action steps do you have in place or working on to make your plans a reality?  It’s not too late to get your plans for 2011 made- it’s never too late!  I love the quote, and I honestly don’t know who said it first, but, “If you keep on doing what you’ve always been doing, you’re going to keep on getting what you’ve already got!”

Make some plans, focus on your day, so you can enjoy every day!

Take some time to decide & commit to making 2011 your best year yet!  YOU CAN!

Make today the best day ever!

Meditation

January 4, 2011 at 4:21 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I’m so encouraged by how much meditation has helped me over the past couple weeks.  I’m going to continue on with this blog regarding it,  for I’ve had other great experiences since doing meditation starting almost a year ago, then not for 3 months, and now going back to meditating regularly.

Meditating helps to clear & calm your mind.  I know, for myself, from the moment I wake up, until I finally rest my head some 16 or more hours later, my mind is constantly going.  Is that the same for you?  I think, for most people, it is.  I have found that taking time at the end of my day- each day, after the kids have gone off to bed, I get my planner, & take just 10-15 minutes,  thinking back through my day- who did I have conversations with?   Who did I get an email or some form of contact from?  What was the conversation, is there something I am suppose to do regarding it?  Is there someone or something I meant to connect with or take care of, but didn’t get to?  I just go through my day, and make sure as best I can, that I’ve followed through with anything I intended to, or if not, then put it on my list  for tomorrow or whenever it needs to be done.  This exercise has been a huge help in clearing my mind so I can sleep better, and also helping me to feel in control and more responsible and also more productive in my day.

There’s different forms of meditating- this is one.  I also do some to help create in my mind what kind of goals & achievements I am striving for- more of a way to help my mind visualize my life as I am creating it to be.  Others include using Cd’s or music, self- meditation of various kinds- using different techniques & forms and you can google meditation and find a plethora of information- sometimes you’ll have to try several to find one or more that’s right for you.  But in my opinion, it is one of the best things you can do for yourself.  One of my favorite mentors to learn about meditation from is John Assaraf, he has a great facebook page too, and really interacts often w/ his fans, but you can also go to his website and find a great deal of info on meditation and the power of the mind.

You don’t have to sit in the ever popular “meditation” pose we think of when we visualize meditation.  Just sit or lie down comfortably.  But find a place that helps you to feel relaxed and at ease.  I recommend you try to be as consistent as possible- pick a particular time each day to do your meditation, and stick to it whenever you can- schedule it into your day.  I know from experience, if I don’t, the day gets gone, and I haven’t done it.  Try it for 30 days, and see how it goes for you, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Would love to hear back from you your experience with meditation!

Make today the best day ever!

2010- 2011 some thoughts

December 28, 2010 at 4:42 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Here we are, upon the final days of 2010.  Everyone, everywhere is talking about New Year’s resolutions and what theirs are, and trying to help or motivate others to make their own.

I had never made an actual New Years Resolution.  I’ve seen, heard, & read about too many people not keeping them, so I figured, “why bother”.  Even though for most of my adult life, I’ve been a goal setter, New Years was never my time to do it.  I went with the flow and set my goals when I felt compelled to.

But last year, as 2009 came to a close, I had already started “Blessings In Disguise” a few months earlier, and was committing about 45 minutes a day to working on it, and it was coming along at a pretty nice pace.  I wanted to set a goal when I wanted it completed by.  I didn’t just flippantly pick a date out of thin air, I went with what felt right,  the end of 2010 was my goal.

I have finished it, and although the rest of my goal to get it published didn’t quite fit in to 2010, I’m okay with not achieving that part of it.  It was in February that the “Juicy Joyful Life” anthology came my way, and I became a co-author in it.  I have started pursuing getting it published, but I will admit, not with a full all out mentality.  I got to a point, these past couple months, I got a little burned out on the book.  I have some options open to me to start small, but I also have some opportunities coming that can do greater things with “Blessings In Disguise”.  I did hear back from one publishing company that told me they’d get back to me after the first of the year.  It wasn’t a no, it wasn’t a yes.  I feel pretty optimistic about it.

So, if you decide to set some goals for yourself, 1 of 3 things will happen.  You’ll give up shortly after starting, and be no further off than you are now.  You’ll make some progress and be somewhat further along, either a little or alot, or 3- You’ll make it fully!!!  Only you can decide which one it’s going to be, and it happens each day you wake up and decide what you’re going to do that day to get you closer to your goal.  If you have a large goal, make smaller ones along the way to help you see progress, and reward yourself for each progress- proportionately.

So we’ve looked at this upcoming year, what about the one we’re about to close a door on.  How was your 2010?  What, if any, progress have you made these past 365 days?  Something I used to struggle about for years was being able to sleep well, and a couple years ago, I started doing positive self talk to change that around and within just a few days, less than a week, I was sleeping sounder, usually straight through the night, and feeling so rested when I woke.

Just over a year ago, I started doing some meditation and hypnotherapy.   I have 2 cd’s I would listen to each day, 1 by John Assaraf that’s about 25 minutes long, and the other I bought at a T. Harv Eker Millionaire Mind Intensive weekend- it’s about 35 minutes.  I had faithfully listened to them each day- John’s in the middle of the day, and the one from MMI as I was going to sleep.  Then, about 6 weeks ago, I was back to waking up in the middle of the night, usually for no apparent reason, and couldn’t figure out why.  Then, less than a week ago, it hit me.
I stopped listening to both of them about 3 months ago.  In trying to find more time to fit in all my responsibilities during the day, I let them go.  And the effects are obvious.  The first night I started listening to them again, I slept much better, and have ever since.  I’ve had considerably better nights sleep these past 5 nights or so,  than I have in the past 3 months combined.

So, if there is one thing this past year you’ve let go that helped you, made you a better person somehow, improved your life or relationships, it’s a  good time to examine how you can put it back in- keep it a priority, and see what’s going on that’s not so important that you can let go.  I know I’ll be continuing my meditation- lesson learned.

I want to extend my sincerest wish to you for a very Happy Healthy & Prosperous New Year- may your 2011 be all that you INTEND it to be and all that you DECIDE to make it!

Make today (and this year) the best ever!

Amy

Things aren’t always as they seem

December 7, 2010 at 3:26 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

photo by ANVrecifeIsn’t it amazing how when somebody does something we view as outrageous, wrong, sneaky, inappropriate, or whatever they do, we are so quick to think the worst of them.  Just like this apple, before we cut into it, we think it’s an apple- but look closer inside, under the skin.  When someone apparently deceives us, we take on this attitude that, “they did it on purpose”.  It seems less & less, people give each other the “benefit of the doubt” these days.

I just had an experience that reminded me of this.

I was ordering some candy- (w/ my Santa hat on), from a company that makes all natural candies that have a product in them called Xylitol, in place of sugar.  You an search that if you want, I’m not going to get in to it here… but it’s actually quite healthy for you.  Any way… I was ordering 1 pound of their assortment of candies.  I thought the price for the candy was reasonable for a high quality, good for you candy.  Going through the order process though, the shipping came to almost $12!  What!?  Well, I simply canceled out of that and decided I’d just by some at our local health food store that was similar, but different- my kids have had that before and this Xylitol candy was something new.

I had already emailed the company previously with a question just yesterday, and received a prompt response, so when this issue came up regarding the shipping, I emailed the lady who responded to me, back and told her, I was in the process of ordering, but was not going to pay nearly $12 for shipping for a 1lb. bag of candy, and to please remove me from the email list I also signed up for.

She got back to me right away, and explained that it is not suppose to be $12, and that she was sorry this happened and to call her directly to place an order if I still wanted to.  I did, and she was very friendly and thanked me for letting them know about the shipping cost.

It was easy for me to assume that the shipping was that high.  Even though I don’t buy online often, but there are many times on a very popular website where you bid on items… people jack up the shipping to make a little…. or alot… of extra dough.  ‘nuf said, there.

So… what if I had gotten mad & angry and called them all kinds of nasty names, and thought they were trying to rip people off?  I’d be out some really cool candy for my kids, yes, but not only that, they may not have noticed the error, and lost many other orders,  AND more importantly, I would have been creating a negative atmosphere for myself, creating and attracting negative energy into my life.  Who needs that???  It certainly wouldn’t have been beneficial to anyone to be nasty myself.

This time of year, emotions run high with extra stress from all the Holiday’s extra requirements.  Please remember to give your neighbor the benefit of the doubt, if something doesn’t seem right, ask them, be kind, you never know what someone else is going through.  Everyone has a story. photo by Hillary Kladke

I wish you great week, enjoy this time of year, make every moment count, breath, prioritize, smile, and hug those you love, and tell them you love them!

Make today the best day ever!

I know with my goals, I sometimes wonder, “why isn’t it happening faster?”  Right?- don’t we all want it- yesterday?  I’ve gotten so caught up in so many personal growth books, and many of them have the same message, just said differently, but many also have a complete opposite message.  Who do you believe?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t read, listen and search for personal development- we absolutely should.  We all need a personal development plan.  But, I found that I was getting so caught up in it, that I was spending more time on it- and analyzing it, then I was doing what actions I needed to take to move me closer to my goal!

Through all the searching, I’ve discovered that I am at a great place emotionally- and with my self- belief; that I do know and believe where I am going in my life, my career, as an author, and as a wife and mother, that I needed to stop acting and treating myself that I still wasn’t “there” yet.  Yes, I need to continue to read, grow, listen and learn, but I need to act like I am already AT my goal- I’m there!  Because in my head, I AM.  But by having this attitude that I wasn’t there yet, I wasn’t acting like I was succeeding- does that make sense?

I’ve limited my personal development time now, to no more than an hour a day- and that includes listening to self- help books on cd in the car, and reading and listening at home.  I spend more time on the actions that I already know I need to do to make progress!

We can read, listen, learn all we want to on how we need to visualize, believe & know, we are achieving our goals- BUT, if we don’t take any action, it’s not likely to fall in our lap.  We need to make the calls, meet people, exercise our mind or our bodies- or both, spend more time in prayer- if our spiritual goal is to grow in that area, whatever it is that we need to do to move us closer to our goal.  Just move, even if it’s small baby steps- do something each day.  Commit to a certain amount of time to make that goal a reality in your life.  Find your why- what it is you truly desire, that will help  you have a passion for keeping on!

As a side note- at least during this month of December, I will be paring down my blogging to Tuesdays only.  You may have already noticed I haven’t been consistent over the past couple months, and I apologize.  I talked a bit about it in one of my recent posts- but there’s also a time factor.  We have 2 of our 3 children w/ December Birthdays, as well as Christmas concerts & plays at school, Christmas parties, shopping, etc.- plus my SendOutCards business gets extra busy during this time of the Holidays, as people are wanting help getting their Holiday cards out quickly- and that is one of my passions- helping others save time & money staying in touch w/ the people in their life, rather it’s business or personal.

And maybe by taking it down to 1/week, I won’t be so overwhelmed w/ it, and will actually do it!  I enjoy writing, and hope you enjoy reading and feel each time your time was well spent and I helped you somehow that day!

Make today the best day ever!
